Imperial Entanglements Storyline
The fall of the Emperor at the Battle of Endor marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. Lord Admiral Mallagant, then an admiral, was present at the battle, commanding a Star Destroyer. When the Executor crashed into the surface of the Death Star, he knew that the battle was over. The Empire had enough firepower to easily finish off the insignificant rebels, but there was no one to take the reigns. Several ships had already begun to withdraw. Mallagant mustered his squadron and moved away from the battlestation, following the retreating rebels. The explosion wiped out several Star Destroyers and ended the career of countless officers. Mallagant's forces turned and made a fighting withdraw, destroying two corvettes and a frigate, the only vessels to be destroyed by Imperial warships in the entire battle. Mallagant's squadron of capital ships fell back to Coruscant.
There Mallagant had to choose which faction of the Empire to support. Sate Pestage had already assumed the throne of the Empire, and being the former Grand Vizier, he was the rightful heir. However, he had a host of enemies in the Ruling Circle. In the end, Mallagant chose to support Ysanne Isard, head of Imperial Intelligence; he felt she was the only person strong enough to hold the Empire together. Mallagant later regretted his decision; shortly after she promoted him to systems admiral, Isard abandoned Coruscant leaving behind the Krytos Virus plague. Rather than see his forces succumb to disease, Mallagant chose to leave the Imperial capitol and return, either when a cure had been found, or more likely to rid the planet of a different plague, the virus that was the rebellion.
Mallagant set his course for the Minos Cluster in the Outer Rim Territories. He chose the Minos Cluster for many reasons, it was along a major trade route, but secluded enough that his force wouldn't be noticed for some time. He also knew that the sector had no organized local government, even the Empire had not fully begun to take control. The local Imperials would be easy to assimilate into his own force. The final reason is that there was a huge number of exiled nobles on Eliad, and these nobles still possessed their wealth. He proved correct in his choice of sectors, within a few months, he had abolished local laws and solidified the Imperial presence in the system. Using the finances acquired on Eliad, Mallagant began to purchase and build manufacturing facilities, shipyards, and defense platforms. He began to build his forces to a formidable level, but keeping everything secluded from the eye of the fledgling New Republic and from other Imperial Warlords.
At about the same time that the New Republic penetrated Coruscant defenses to find the dying planet plagued by the Krytos Virus, Mallagant and his forces had launched their attack on the nearby Kathol Sector. The Kathol Sector had been under the control of Moff Sarne, a pompous and arrogant bureaucrat. Sarne's forces were loyal officers, only serving the Moff to stay together and focused. When Mallagant entered the sector the majority of Sarne's forces joined him to overthrow the Moff. Within a year after Mallagant's initial attack, Moff Sarne was defeated and Mallagant had established himself as Lord Admiral. Mallagant now had two sectors under his command and interstellar commerce flourished. The Lord Admiral began increasing his military power, reinforcing his defenses in both sectors but made no aggressive moves for over a year.
Now that a solid base of power had been established, Lord Admiral Mallagant is ready to take his campaign on to a larger scale. He has made declarations to other Imperial warlords, urging them to join him and unify the Empire. Most refused, some factions splintered even further, with personnel leaving their duties to join the Lord Admiral in his quest. Mallagant has decided that Elrood Sector and the supreme rule of Moff Andal and General Hul would make a perfect example to the other warlords that joining him was the only way to unit the Empire.
