Imperial Army Organization

bulletSquad - A squad has eight combat soldiers, in addition to and commanded by a sergeant.  A corporal is second-in-command, chosen from the regular soldiers.  A squad is the basic combat unit of the Imperial Army.
bulletLine Squad - A line squad is the basic unit of the Imperial Army.  It is a pure infantry unit, with at least one soldier equipped with a light repeating blaster.
bulletSharpshooter Squad - Sharpshooter squads are indeed filled with troopers whose accuracy with blasters is greater than the standard trooper.  Each man is trained in several different skills, and before each mission the sergeant appoints the trooper with the most pertinent skills as brevet corporal.  Each soldier is expected to be good enough to decide how best to improvise should the sergeant and corporal be eliminated from the mission profile.
bulletEngineering Squad - An engineering squad contains specialists in non-combat skills who have some combat training, mixed with combat experts who have been given intensive training in other useful skills.  They are designed to get into, go through, go around, or go over just about anything.  They are also expected to be able to operate, repair, or dismantle any piece of equipment they come across.  There is no such thing as standard equipment for an engineering squad.  They usually carry ample supplies of explosives and thermal detonators.
bulletRepulsorlift Squad - Standard repulsorlift squads have eight troopers, a sergeant, and two light transport vehicles.  Each vehicle has a four-man crew, including a trooper mechanic, a driver, a tech/sensor officer, and a commander who usually doubles as the gunner.
bulletHeavy Weapons Repulsorlift Squad - Heavy weapons repulsorlift squads are those which have additional armaments built into their vehicle, most often dismount weapons such as a heavy repeating blaster, a grenade launcher, or even a light laser cannon.
bulletScout Trooper Squad - A scout trooper squad, often referred to as a lance, contains five scouts (including the sergeant) and their vehicles.  Scout troopers are responsible for maintaining their own speeder bike.
bulletHeavy Weapons Squad - Heavy weapons squads are essentially infantry squads that are equipped with two- or three-man medium or three-man heavy repeating blasters.
bulletArtillery Section - Artillery squads or sections are made up of one eight-man heavy or medium artillery piece of two four-man light artillery pieces.  Artillery pieces range from laser and ion cannons to indirect fire projectile weapons.
bulletArmor Squad - An armor squad has either two medium or light vehicles or one heavy vehicle.  Armor squads are almost never deployed alone.
bulletPlatoon - A platoon is composed of four squads.  Commanded by lieutenant and assisted by a senior sergeant.  A platoon is the smallest unit which can request fire support from other units.
bulletLine Platoon - A line platoon contains four line squads for a total of 38 troops including the lieutenant and sergeant major.
bulletAssault Platoon - An assault platoon, also called a heavy weapons platoon, contains two line squads and two heavy weapons squads.  The heavy weapons squads are usually armed with heavy repeating blasters.
bulletArtillery Platoon - An artillery platoon, called a line, contains four artillery sections.  It consists of either four heavy or medium artillery tubes, or eight light artillery pieces.
bulletRepulsorlift Platoon - A repulsorlift platoon contains four repulsorlift squads and a command element.  The command element contains two light transport vehicles modified with heavier armor and greater repulsor power to compensate.
bulletHeavy Weapons Repulsorlift Platoon - Heavy repulsorlift platoons contain four heavy repulsorlift squads and a command element.  Like repulsorlift platoons, the command element contains two light transport vehicles modified with heavier armor and greater repulsor power to compensate.  There is also a support vehicle with a crew of mechanics and a cargo of parts.
bulletArmor Platoon - An armor platoon has either four heavy vehicles or eight medium or light vehicles.  These vehicles can be either repulsorlift tanks, walkers, or heavily armored combat vehicles.  They are accompanied by two heavy transport vehicles which carry the necessary spare parts and a crew of mechanics.
bulletSpecial Missions Platoon - Two sharpshooter squads, a heavy weapons squad, and a squad of engineers make up a special missions platoon.  This platoon is deployed when a few elite men can accomplish an objective that would take several standard military platoons.
bulletScout Platoon - A scout platoon contains two line squads and a scout squadron.  A scout squadron is two lances of five scouts each.
bulletCompany - A company is the smallest unit which is capable of extended operations on its own.  It contains four platoons and is commanded by a captain.
bulletLine Company - A line company is simply four line platoons.  There are 180 men in a line company, including command and support staff.
bulletDrop Company - Drop companies are essentially line companies with expanded support.  As such it is listed as a line company in the OB.  A drop company can be orbit-loaded for missions of up to six weeks duration, although two weeks is the Imperial standard.  Support staff are trained in a variety of environments, and they in turn instruct individual platoons on what they can expect when they reach the surface.
bulletArtillery Company - Also known as batteries, artillery companies, have either 16 heavy or medium artillery tubes or 32 light pieces.
bulletAssault Company - Assault companies, also known as heavy weapons companies, have two assault platoons, two line platoons, and the usual command and support element.
bulletAttack Armor Company - An attack armor company has three tank platoons and a heavy weapons repulsorlift platoon.  The command element contains 16 heavy tanks if it is a heavy company or 28 light tanks if it is a light company and nine heavy weapons repulsorlifts.  The captain commands from a modified heavy tank.  This tank is expected to perform all command functions simultaneously and consumes tremendous amounts of power.
bulletBreakthrough Armor Company - Also known as a heavy armor company, a breakthrough company is the leanest of the armor companies.  Its support element is attached to battalion headquarters and does not travel with the company.  A breakthrough company is nothing but four tank platoons and a command tank.  They are designed to bust through enemy lines and wreak havoc.  Their missions are to destroy enemy assets and seize lightly contested assets and holding them until more balanced forces arrive.  A breakthrough company operates on limited supplies and therefore operations seldom exceed 72 hours in length.
bulletRepulsorlift Company - A repulsorlift company contains two repulsorlift platoons and two line platoons.  There is a total of 31 vehicles in the company, including eight command and support vehicles.
bulletSpecial Missions Company -  Special missions companies consist of three special missions platoons and a scout platoon.  They often operate in "zones of increased hostility density."
bulletScout Company - Known as troops, scout companies contain four scout platoons and a command element.  There are 40 speeder bikes as well as a command speeder.
bulletBattalion - On the battalion level, the organization makes a large change at the level of the command and support elements, which are now pooled together into the battalion headquarters.  Unlike company command elements, which are expected to be close to and often involved with the combat actions, battalion HQs are expected to be relatively secure.  Battalions are headed by a major, with five staff officers who hold the rank of captain.  Typically there are 90 men and 145 droids in a battalion HQ, including a platoon of 38 security personnel.
bulletLine Battalion - Line battalions have four companies, three of them line companies and one assault company, in addition to the HQ.  Line battalions are committed to more ground combats than any other type of unit in the galaxy, as a battalion is the usual minimum Imperial commanders will consider dropping for a surface operation, and line battalions are more common than any other type.
bulletAssault Battalion - Assault battalions consist of one line company, two assault companies, a repulsorlift company, and the HQ.  Assault battalions are most often used in urban areas for attacking a single enemy stronghold.  They are often the first battalion to bust dirt as the vanguard battalion for a large surface operation.
bulletRepulsorlift Battalion - Repulsorlift battalions are made up of three repulsorlift companies, a scout company, and the HQ.  Repulsorlift HQ has 18 repulsorlifts to move everyone in HQ.  Repulsorlift battalions are most commonly used to gather information on the enemy's movements, cut off enemy retreats, disrupt supply lines, harass enemy movement, and take lightly defended resources away from the main theater of operations.  They are committed to a frontal assault only if the commander needs to use every single trooper he has.
bulletArtillery Battalion - Artillery battalions have three batteries plus an assault company to provide protection, giving the artillery an opportunity to retreat and set up elsewhere if necessary.  They have either 48 heavy or medium artillery tubes, or 96 light tubes, plus the attendant vehicles necessary to move the artillery.
bulletArmor Battalion - Consisting of a breakthrough company, two attack armor companies, and a repulsorlift company, an armor battalion represents a near optimum combination of combined arms firepower and mobility.  What they lack is staying power, they have too few troops to set up adequate defensive positions.  Armor battalions are used primarily for attacks or mobile defense.  HQ is mobilized in 24 HTVs.  Armor battalions have 55 repulsorlift vehicles and either 53 heavy or 93 light tanks.  Light tank battalions are ideal for situations where the opponent is not heavily armed, nor has time to construct fortifications.
bulletSpecial Missions Battalion - Special missions battalions are the largest special missions units recognized in the Imperial Army.  They consist of four special missions companies and an HQ.  Special missions HQ is expected to be directly involved in the combat operation.  In place of the standard support personnel are engineers who double as support when things calm down.
bulletRegiment - Regiments are commanded by a colonel who runs an HQ identical in structure to that of a battalion with the exception of a larger compliment of droids.  Regiment HQ is where the most extensive repairs are performed, and some HQs even have a capacity to machine or manufacture precise spare parts from very basic components.  Regimental HQs often stay aboard their assigned naval vessel, as orbital command control is as good in most instances as control on the ground.  If orbital command is disrupted, the HQ can be quickly dropped.  If regimental HQ is dropped with the attacking forces, it is an indication that the Empire expects to maintain a ground force for at least a month and that the naval presence will not be continual.
bulletLine Regiment - A line regiment contains two line battalions, one assault battalion, and one repulsorlift battalion.  The unit contains over 2,000 troopers with approximately 1,000 additional support personnel with 130 repulsorlift vehicles.  A line regiment is most commonly deployed on worlds with low level resistance.
bulletAssault Regiment - Assault regiments, containing two assault battalions, one line battalion, and an armor battalion, are deployed when intelligence sources can define areas of limited size on the surface that are under the control of an enemy.  The assault regiment is dropped to retake those areas.  Assault regiments are not usually deployed for any length of time.  Once the stronghold has been cleared, a line regiment replaces the assault regiment.  The assault regiment can then be dropped to another hot zone.  Most often the armor battalion will consist of heavy tanks.
bulletRepulsorlift Regiment - Repulsorlift regiments are put down on worlds where enemy activity is light but spread across a vast area.  The repulsorlift regimental HQ is dropped more frequently than others.  This is not for any command control reason, but for a bit of psychological warfare.  By dropping the HQ, the Army provides the enemy with a tempting target; destroy the HQ and the unit fails to function effectively, if at all.  But the HQ is mobile, and competent Imperial commanders can lay traps with the regiment, engaging and destroying enemy units which attempt to strike at the HQ.  Repulsorlift regiments consist of three repulsorlift battalions and an armor battalion.
bulletArtillery Regiment - Artillery regiments contain three artillery battalions, an assault battalion, and are normally augmented with a single scout company.  Artillery regiments consist of between 144 and 288 artillery pieces depending on size as well as 199 attendant repulsorlift vehicles.
bulletArmor Regiment - Armor regiments, containing two armor battalions and two repulsorlift battalions, are not to be deployed alone.  They are to be deployed only as part of a battlegroup.  The Imperial military considers an armor regiment to have too much firepower for the normal regimental engagement.  They do not have enough infantry to hold any ground they might take which would justify using an armor regiment.  An armor regiment has 304 repulsorlift vehicles and 106 heavy tanks.
bulletVanguard Armor Regiment - A vanguard armor regiment is basically a heavy armor regiment trading one of the repulsorlift battalions for another armor battalion for a total of 262 repulsorlift vehicles and a 159 heavy tanks.
bulletCOMPNOR Regiment - A COMPNOR Regiment or CompForce has a structure like a line regiment with the exception of the lack of security platoons.  COMPNOR volunteers are fanatical, and their loyalty is unshakeable under every condition yet faced.  CompForce commanders have dispensed with the security platoons as unnecessary to a well run unit.
bulletBattlegroup - Battlegroups are commanded by a high colonel who is aided by five staff officers and four substaff officers.  188 support personnel and 76 troopers in two security platoons for a total of 274 men in the HQ.  Battlegroups are committed to major offensives against known concentrations of resistance.  The Empire doesn't drop a battlegroup on a world just to take a look around, a battlegroup drops when the Empire knows it has a tough fight on its hands.
bulletLine Battlegroup - Three line regiments and an assault regiment make up a line battlegroup for a total of over 10,000 troopers with 511 repulsorlift vehicles and 53 heavy tanks.  Line battlegroups are now considered to be underpowered for dealing with any threat worthy of a battlegroups attention.  The military is debating trying to upgrade all line battlegroups to assault battlegroups, but the required resources and the reorganization difficulties have prevented the idea from taking hold.
bulletAssault Battlegroup - An assault battlegroup has two line regiments, an assault regiment, and an armor regiment for a total of over 10,000 troops, 676 repulsorlift vehicles, and 212 heavy tanks.  They are considered the most versatile battlegroup, with a good mix of firepower and staying power.
bulletArmored Battlegroup - Armored battlegroups are dropped into missions where the enemy has several concentrations of strength in an area of moderate size.  The armored battlegroup is designed to quickly hit these concentrations in succession, one or two at a time.  An armored battlegroup is comprised of two armor regiments and two vanguard armor regiments for a total of 318 tanks, 1,132 repulsorlift vehicles, and 10,000 troops.
bulletMobile Battlegroup - Mobile battlegroups are deployed on worlds where there are enemy areas adjacent to areas loyal to the Empire.  Mobile battlegroups are used to shift quickly in response to enemy incursions, and to make lightning strikes into enemy territory.  They are comprised of three assault regiments and one armor regiment.
bulletAuxiliary Battlegroup - Auxiliary battlegroups are not traditional battlegroups.  They have no commander and they never operate as a battlegroup.  They are merely and organizational convenience for grouping resources.  An auxiliary battlegroup has three CompForce regiments and a ground support wing of TIE fighters.  Unlike the naval wing of 72 starfighters, ground support wings contain 40 fighters organized into 10 flights.
bulletCorps - The corps is one of the few instances of real cooperation between the Army and the Navy.  Imperial military planners from each branch designed the transport ship to hold all corps types, building into the possibility for expansion in both the starship and the unit.  When the Empire deploys a corps onto a world, it is taking that world, regardless of the propaganda.  The corps is the largest force likely to be deployed as a coordinated force on a single world.  It is commanded by a major general, who has five staff officers who each have two assistants of their own.  There is a full company of security troopers as well as 50 ISB agents and a single Imperial Intelligence agent.  There is almost 500 support personnel and a enormous contingent of droids.  In some cases an I2F-73 industrial droid is deployed to serve as a mobile processing and manufacturing plant, able to make glow rods, blaster packs, and even repulsorlift engines upon demand.  If a corps can keep the complex producing, it can operate without Imperial resupply indefinitely.  A corps HQ is the basis for an Imperial Garrison which contains an almost identical structure.  Therefore there are far more corps HQs than their are corps themselves, as a the forces often move from garrison to garrison as needed, their command element always being in place when they arrive.  The distinction of the different types of corps is important in Surface Operations Training Documents, and mobile corps are organized for maneuver operations better than armor corps.  However, the average enemy commander isn't going to care what type of corps just smashed his defenses and overran his position.
bulletLine Corps - Line corps have three line battlegroups and one assault battlegroup for a total of 48,541 troopers in a unit of 69,199 men.  It comes equipped with 2,599 repulsorlift vehicles and at least 371 heavy tanks
bulletAssault Corps - Assault corps have two assault battlegroups, one line battlegroup, and an armored battlegroup for a total of 48,403 troops with 3,385 repulsorlift vehicles and 795 heavy tanks.
bulletMobile Corps - Mobile corps have three mobile battlegroups and an armored battlegroup for a total of 48,508 troops from 71,615 men, with 5,548 repulsorlift vehicles and 1,113 heavy tanks.
bulletArmor Corps - Armor corps have three armored battlegroups and one mobile battlegroup for a total of 48,192 troopers from 74,794 men, 5,128 repulsorlifts, and 1,219 heavy tanks.
bulletArmy - An army is commanded by a general and its HQ is larger than two full battalions, containing five staff officers their 10 subordinate officers, a security company, six perimeter patrol platoons, 200 ISB agents, 784 support personnel, three COMPNOR observer companies plus a command element for each.  Four Imperial Intelligence agents bring the total number of HQ personnel up to 1,855 and there are at least twice that many droids.  An army consists of one each of the four different corps: line, atrisian, armor, and mobile.  This gives an army 193,644 troops, 293,686 total personnel, 16,660 repulsorlift vehicles, and 3,498 heavy tanks.  An army is built to be transported by nothing less than a full naval troop squadron.  Armies rarely see action in the field as a coordinated unit, however increasing military buildup by New Republic forces will most likely lead to a revival of the doctrine concerning the use of an entire army in the field.
bulletSystems Army  - The systems army is more of a bookkeeping level of organization rather than a unit that ever sees action in the field.  The HQ is the same size as that of the army.  It is commanded by a high general and the primary function of the HQ is to make sure that all of the subordinate commanders know where all of the other military resources in the sector are.  If a major general needs naval support for his unit greater than what is available in his drop line, system HQ will try to find the nearest naval support units and relay the information to the major general.
bulletSector Army - A surface marshal commands the sector army, the sector army includes every single army trooper in an assault fleet.  This is 774,576 troops and 1,180,309 personnel in total and 66,640 repulsorlift vehicles as well as 13,992 heavy tanks.
