Physical Description: SP-22 is normally clad in the black and red armour of a Sovereign Protector. This reduces him from an individual to a faceless servant of the late Emperor. He prefers this stripping away of identity; wearing the armour fills SP-22 with a sense of belonging and strength. SP-22 is built for combat. He stands at an intimidating height of over six feet. He has broad shoulders and a thick neck, with a muscular physique. On the rare occasions he removes his helmet, an ugly and unforgiving countenance is revealed. His face is wide, with a dominant brow and large, flat nose. He has a thick jawline. His face is marked with several vicious scars, which he calls “vibroblade lovebites”. Underneath a scowling brow are harsh and alert brown eyes. His hair is dark brown, and shorn to a military buzzcut. His mouth has thin lips but is large and spreading. The corners curve downward, adding to his unpleasant expression. SP-22 has joked he only has two expressions, “Angry” and “Very Angry”. He has also remarked, “It is unfit for anyone to smile until the Emperor’s murderers have been hunted down.”

Background: SP-22’s service record is one of martial excellence and obedience. He was born on Nar Shaddaa. The son of a bounty hunter and a prostitute, both of his parents were dead by the time he was seventeen. He joined Imperial service to escape poverty.

6 BBY: The young man displayed determination and loyalty in training, and was enlisted as a stormtrooper. He accepted his new designation as DP-019 without question. Over the next few years DP-019 would see nearly continuous action as he participated in several campaigns in the Outer Rim against rebels, pirates and independent worlds. He was consistently noted for his courage and leadership qualities.

5 BBY: During the siege of a rebel stronghold on Ragnar IV, DP-019 braved mortar fire to rescue a wounded commander, and then rushed the enemy mortar pit armed with nothing but a grenade and a blaster pistol. His attack was so swift and brutal that eleven dazed rebels surrendered to the lone stormtrooper. This episode led to his promotion to platoon sergeant. His men nicknamed him “Rancor”. There soon arose a saying in his platoon: “Don’t fuck with Rancor”.

4 BBY: DP-019 was transferred to the planet Skann for peacekeeping operations. DP-019 was to learn with frightening indifference what ‘peacekeeping’ meant in the Empire when his platoon was assigned a squad of incinerator troopers. The governor of Skann, the Baronet Desbold Raef, proved disloyal and weak stomached. Raef used Imperial funds and his vast personal wealth to bribe many Imperial units stationed on Skann into laying down their arms or joining his rebellion. DP-019’s stormtrooper battalion remained loyal to the Emperor, and fled into the mountains of Skann to begin a guerilla campaign. Unfortunately, DP-019 was captured during a raid for supplies. He was sent to a POW camp and tortured for information. DP-019 remained defiantly silent. Several weeks later an Imperial Taskforce swarmed across Skann, ending Raef’s short-lived regime. Imperial troops liberated the camp DP-019 was being held at, and found the broken stormtrooper chained underground. Convalescing aboard a hospital ship with Bacta treatment, DP-019 recovered fully. Despite declarations of liberty and freedom, Raef and his populist government had resorted to torture extensively against loyalist forces. DP-019 found a valuable lesson in the Skann Uprising. What he had learned through indoctrination was shown to be true.

When DP-019 returned to active duty, he was notified of his promotion to Platoon Leader and commissioning as a Lieutenant. Adorned in black tunic, pants, cap and bearing a shining rank plaque DP-019 reported for his next assignment.

3 BBY: DP-019 was assigned to the 822nd Assault Legion, ‘The Jagged Wedge’. He was given command of a recon platoon, a scout-trooper and regular stormtrooper composite unit.

2 BBY-1 BBY: The 822nd participated in several anti-rebellion operations. DP-019’s platoon gained a reputation as the “Teleporting Platoon”, because of its ability to seemingly disappear and then reappear in unexpected locations. Fighting religious zealots on the moons of Kuridasha the Teleporting Platoon was all but wiped out during a fierce enemy offensive. Stuck deep behind enemy lines, DP-019 and the survivors stole enemy uniforms and infiltrated their way back to the nearest Imperial units.

Following the Kuridasha expedition, DP-019’s gallant record came to the attention of Royal Guard recruiters. DP-019 was removed from combat duty to receive training as an elite guardsman. He was sent to the secret academy on Yinchorr along with almost fifty other candidates. On Yinchorr DP-019 devoted his every waking moment to perfecting his combat skills and honing his focus. Retrospectively, he would discover that his as-yet-untapped connection to the Force gave him an advantage over many of his fellow candidates.

1 ABY – 2 ABY: DP-019 was instructed in unarmed combat, vibroblade mastery, marksmanship and various other skills. The standards demanded were of the highest order. When only a handful of candidates remained alive, the survivors were placed into pairs. Each man would have to rely on their ‘Brother’ to achieve success. DP-019 maintained a cordial but aloof attitude toward his ‘Brother’. This made his death at DP-019’s own hand much easier to bear.

In a final demonstration of loyalty, the handful of surviving students had to fight their Brothers to the death in the arena known as ‘The Squall’. This act of devotion was done before the Emperor himself. Lord Vader also attended. DP-019 slew his Brother without much difficulty. DP-019 felt no pity or remorse. Had DP-019 been the weaker candidate, his Brother would not have shown mercy. DP-019 would not have wished to live in defeat, besides.

Four men remained standing at the end of the Squall combat. They bowed before the Emperor. Thoughtful yellow eyes glowed under a cowl, his bony face shadowed. “Your time on Yinchorr has made each of you powerful. You can now be counted amongst the finest warriors in the galaxy. But… fighting ability is not enough. Lord Vader.” The black cape swirled, and in several crimson-red flashes two of the candidates fell to the ground, headless. DP-019 watched as a decapitated head rolled gently toward his feet. He did not move. His expression remained neutral.

Vader switched off his lightsaber and stepped backward toward his Master. He spoke in his baritone voice, “These two candidates both felt regret for slaying their Brothers. They hesitated. The Emperor’s guardsmen must obey the Emperor without question.”

Palpatine spat out, “Weak feelings such as compassion have no place within my inner circles.” His tone softened and he continued, “Well done DP-019, ----, and AH-632, Baldur Bane. You have proven yourselves worthy in every aspect of service.”

2.5 ABY: DP-019 is re-designated RG-93. He escorts Emperor Palpatine to Imperial Centre, where he is assigned to the Palace Guard. RG-93 remains a faithful servant. He learns much about the Empire’s inner workings and secret leadership while standing sentry in the halls of power.

2.8 ABY: RG-93 is personally selected as part of a commando team by the Emperor. This commando team was codenamed ‘Comet’, and would carry out ‘Operation Scorpion’. ‘Comet’ consisted of Storm Commandoes and Royal Guardsmen, who would discard their red robes and don the black armour of their storm commando brethren for this mission. RG-93 acted as a sub-commander in ‘Comet’. Operation Scorpion involved Comet infiltrating the Palace of an influential Moff. The Moff was absent at the time of the operation, but he was not the target. His son was. They were to eliminate the palace security force and kidnap the son. With the son as the Emperor’s hostage, the troublesome Moff would become more ‘flexible’. The infiltrators snuck into the palace like shadows. The son was stunned and seized with astounding speed and finesse. There were zero casualties amongst the infiltrators.

3 ABY: Because of his outstanding performance in practice sessions and the recognition of his latent Force sensitivity, RG-93 was selected to train as a Sovereign Protector under the tutelage of a Dark Side Adept.

“I sense an almost droid like loyalty in RG-93, yet he displays resourcefulness on the battlefield. His zealous servitude does not entail mindlessness. I would submit to your Majesty that he is a strong and crafty warrior.” - Quoted from a secret report to Palpatine on RG-93’s potential promotion to Sovereign Protector.

RG-93 was transferred to the secret Deep Core world of Byss. RG-93 received rudimentary training in the Force. The training was designed to harness RG-93’s dormant power, but not unlock its full potential. RG-93 did not openly challenge this method. However, the Byss Mages and Dark Side Adepts that guided him within the Imperial Citadel were only whetting the young warrior’s appetite. Now he had been exposed to such power, he secretly craved more. Despite emotional struggle, these personal cravings were subordinated to his service to the Emperor. RG-93 was a quick learner. The elevation to Sovereign Protector did not require RG-93 to kill any of his fellow students. When the training was concluded, he was given new armour and re-designated SP-22. He served for a short time as part of the Byss garrison.

4 ABY: SP-22 was given command of a secret operation codenamed “Operation Morning Star”. The operation’s objective was to assassinate a leading rebel figure hiding in the Jospro Sector. The target was an Alliance strategist and scientist, the Nautolan Hin Manus. SP-22 commanded a small team of twenty-four of his fellow Protectors. He was also issued with special authority from the Emperor, ‘empowering the commander with the imperium to seize and commandeer Imperial assets, and direct or otherwise issue orders to Imperial Forces, so that he may succeed in his mission.’ It was in essence a carte blanche. When he arrived in the Jospro Sector he found it infested with rebels, and the Imperial forces beleaguered. Intelligence estimates back on Byss were grossly optimistic. SP-22 presented himself and his team to the local Imperial commander, Major General Crannog Exnoun. SP-22 and his ‘Special Imperial Directive’ managed to intimidate Exnoun sufficiently that he became grudgingly obliging. After a month of intelligence gathering, SP-22 discovered that Manus was hiding near a secret A-wing manufacturing facility on Cardooine. Exnoun wanted to send a large portion of his Battlegroup in for a full scale assault. This plan was vetoed by SP-22 who wanted to be guaranteed his target was killed (specifically, he wanted to see the life go from the Manus’ eyes himself). Threats both verbal and physical were used against Exnoun to ensure he would cooperate. SP-22 formulated a simple raid plan: Three platoons of Exnoun’s best stormtroopers (White Group) would airdrop between the lakeside village of Esh Soodata and Manus’ forest hideout and engage the rebels billeted in the village. SP-22 and his twenty-four Protectors (Black Group) would drop closer to Manus’ hideout, assassinate him and then link up with White Group for extraction.

The plan went disastrously wrong from the very start. Many of White Group’s drop-pods landed off-course, some landing in the lake (drowning the occupant) or landing too far away. Others were shot down by rebel surface to air missiles and laser fire. White Group could only muster 20% strength. When the rebels from Esh Soodata gathered to attack, White Group was outnumbered and began suffering further casualties. Soon the unit was wiped out. Black Group faired equally as badly. Some of their pods had been destroyed by anti aircraft weapons as well, reducing their number to nineteen. The pods that survived landed in a large clearing. This made them highly vulnerable for when the Manus HQ Escort Company, a unit of only thirty-six men, fell upon them. Although the fierce Protectors wiped out this under strength unit, they were down now only to thirteen men and had been delayed. By the time they reached Manus’ hideout, he had long since fled.
Exnoun ordered an extensive bombardment of the area and the survivors were evacuated. The hidden A-wing factory was promptly relocated by the Alliance.

SP-22 blamed Exnoun and his staff for the failure: He claimed the airdrop had been handled horrendously, he had been given flawed intelligence and that support from TIE Bombers promised by Exnoun had not appeared. In fairness, the TIE Bombers had been ordered to hold when it became clear the rebels had greater anti aircraft potential than originally thought. But SP-22’s other accusations were painfully justified. An extremely bitter dispute followed. The argument ended abruptly when news of the Battle of Endor reached Jospro Sector. SP-22 had sensed an indistinct but troubling disturbance in the Force, but this news was beyond his greatest fears: The Emperor slain.

Exnoun declared SP-22’s authority from the Emperor was no longer valid, and ordered him arrested. SP-22 never discerned Exnoun’s motives. Was the General afraid of retribution for when SP-22 returned to Coruscant and gave a ‘biased account’ of his conduct, or was he just a shameless bastard pursuing a personal vendetta? SP-22 and his men escaped custody and stole an Imperial shuttle, fleeing the Sector.

SP-22 returned to Coruscant where he found the Imperial Court in disarray. Factions vied for dominance. SP-22 attached himself to Grand Vizier Sate Pestage, as he seemed prima facie the likely successor. Many guardsmen did the same. As Pestage proved weak and inefficient many guardsmen’s allegiance to the Grand Vizier wavered. SP-22 was responsible for putting down a conspiracy to murder Pestage amongst military men and (scandalously) fellow guardsmen. This sudden division of loyalties within the Guard disgusted SP-22. Ironically, just a few weeks later SP-22 would betray and abandon Pestage. He led many of his brothers into the service of Intelligence Director Ysanne Isard, a steely woman who had proven a stronger leader than Pestage. Isard gladly welcomed a host of guardsmen, including Sovereign Protectors. Many guardsmen had already sworn fealty to her.

5 ABY-8 ABY: Isard ‘loaned’ SP-22 to one of her ablest commanders, Systems Admiral Viktor Mallagant. SP-22 grew to admire Mallagant, a fellow Force user and a man of determination. As his respect for Mallagant grew, his faith in Isard withered. She was a scheming and destructive woman. When Mallagant decided to retreat to the Outer Rim to set up his own fiefdom, SP-22 decided to follow him. SP-22 told him gruffly, “Sir, as long as you promise me I don’t need to involve myself in any more fucking politics I’m your man.”

9 ABY: The Thrawn Campaign. Mallagant participated in Grand Admiral Thrawn’s offensives. SP-22 devised and conducted several successful black ops missions.

10 ABY: SP-22 requests that he be trained in the Force thoroughly enough to become a Dark Side Apprentice. This request was denied, and instead he was sent to a secret training school to instruct special operations’ recruits. This was a task that he disliked. An excessive amount of recruits died during his training exercises, giving cause for the school commandant to tell SP-22, “F—k me, this ain’t Yinchorr.”

11 ABY: SP-22 is reassigned to active duty. During Operation Imperial Resurgence, he acts as a sub-commander during a raid in the Sluis Van system. The raid involved the boarding and capturing of the ISD Adjudicator to restore her to the Empire, and then a sneak attack on the system orbital HQ. Lady Prelicia Vontessar commanded the mission. SP-22 personally disarmed the self destruct device aboard the HQ.

When fellow guardsman ARC-036 was relieved of command of Special Operations, SP-22 was appointed commander. His background with small unit black ops was the reason for the appointment.

Personality: Killing the Empire’s enemies is never far from SP-22’s mind; whether he’s relaxing with a wench or attending a lecture on IEDs. He has been crafted over many years into an obedient, ruthless killing machine. The system has rewarded him with consistent advancement and opportunity for improvement. The Empire provides him with self-respect, identity and purpose. It gives him a sense of belonging to something much more immense than any one man. The day he is discharged and ordered to stop killing is the day he becomes an emotional wreck.

SP-22 has always been ambitious, but making the Empire’s goals his own has consistently aided his status. More recently when the Empire has blocked his initiation into the Sith, stifling his personal feelings and nodding with a ‘Yes sir’ has been difficult. Years of institutionalization succeeded.

He has never lost the black, sarcastic sense of humour he garnered as a youth on the streets of Nar Shaddaa. Years of war has only increased this darkly plucky outlook on life. Nar Shaddaa urchins and stormtrooper non-coms tend to have an indelicate way of speaking but SP-22 can ‘soften’ his speech for superiors. Those serving under him can expect to be profanely shamed if they do not perform. He only expects the best from himself and therefore demands everybody else perform at his level.
SP-22 is brutal, violent, fearless and very talented.

Objectives: Whip the bunch of wimps known as 'Special Operations' into a decent fighting unit.
