In all ways in his appearance, he is the classical, stereotypical example of a member of Praesitlyn’s nobility – including the large, aristocratically-curved nose which would be considered attractive on Praesitlyn and not generally elsewhere. His physical condition is as good as it was a decade ago, as he makes a point of practicing his traditional fencing methods frequently and taking plenty of exercise. He has dark blond hair and observant green eyes. |

| Background:
(Note: This is based on the original version of Praesitlyn, as shown in WEG books among others, which places it in the Core Worlds as an Imperial political stronghold, rather than the contradictory Clone Wars retcon which changed the nature of the planet entirely and made it it a rebellious, independent world in the Outer Rim. The character was originally created for SWC well before the retcon, and is reproduced here with an improved, rewritten background.) Aglad bal-Evoros was born on Praesitlyn, a member of the planet's rich, governing elite. This was reflected even in his name – like the traditions of many Core Worlds, members of the nobility received an honorific attached to their family name. For the nobles of Praesitlyn, this was the ‘bal’ prefix. His father, the senior Aglad bal-Evoros, was a, upstanding, high-ranking bureaucrat and inner member of the local Moff’s court, and his mother, Ksenia, was a noblewoman and socialite, a well-known participant in the court’s backroom political games and backbiting. Consequently, he dwelt in luxurious apartments in the government level in the Great Palace of Praesitlyn. His mother and father made an excellent team, handling the under-the-table deals and the above-board public aspects of politics, respectively. As a consequence, he quickly learned his way around political life, and by the age of ten, he was a major contributor in political discussions among the other noble children. Educated in the prestigious Imperial Academy for Boys, the expensive and exclusive school for the male children of Praesitlyn’s governing classes, he consistently got high marks and was appointed as a prefect for several years running. It would be inaccurate to say that he was necessarily popular among his peers, for a precocious child tends to make his contemporaries look bad. While he did his best to be friendly, Aglad would not allow his moral standards to slip, and so he gained a reputation among the other boys as a tattletale – for he would shamelessly report the misbehaviour of others. Perhaps ironically, it was this trait which first resulted in his being noticed in particular. At one point in his early teens, Aglad indirectly prevented an assassination attempt upon the Moff. He had been waiting in the Great Hall, planning to meet with a girl of his age one of the observation balconies, when he heard furtive voices on the next balcony along. Having been taught from an early age that knowledge was another means to power, he crouched down low, and strained to listen. Their conversation revealed to him that they were political allies of the Governor of Praesitlyn, Zachori bal-Elando, one of the most important members of the court, rumoured to have ambitions to become Moff himself. The conversation included the idea, more than the plan, to poison the Moff and set up their candidate as the natural successor. Aglad summoned the Palace Guard, who arrested the two conspirators, and quickly arrested the Governor and his supporters planetwide. The poisoning was by no means entirely competent or well-thought-out as a plan, but it was the excuse that the Moff needed to secure his position against possible contenders. An entire political faction was eliminated -using the death penalty for treason - at one stroke, and the teenager, through his loyalty to the New Order, had made it possible. The Moff made sure that his loyalty was worthwhile. Personal letters of reference poured into Aglad’s lap, all from the Moff’s high-ranking supporters – admirals, generals, even senior Imperial Security Bureau officials and the Moff himself. With this critical mass of patronage behind him, he had his pick of any career path the Empire could offer, it was not long before the young man chose to attend ‘the’ Imperial Naval Academy. Finally, he was surrounded by people often almost exactly like himself – ambitious, high-achieving, and devoted to bringing order to the galaxy. As he had done before, he continued to excel, attaining high marks and being awarded the coveted Palpatine Cluster. His first assignment was as a bridge officer on the Victory-class Star Destroyer Archon. He immensely enjoyed his time on the Archon, striking up a mutual rapport and respect with its Captain – the Clone Wars veteran Brel Martyn, a competent but unremarkable old officer. Aglad also gained a great fondness for the venerable Victory-class design, intimately coming to know its strengths, weaknesses, and its systems inside out. Upon his promotion to Lieutenant Commander, after several years of service in the Archon, he was reassigned to what Captain Martyn hoped would be a career-advancing post as the operations officer of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Purgator. Lieutenant Commander bal-Evoros, unfortunately, discovered that his relationship with this commanding officer would not be as pleasant as with the previous one. Captain Rand was a jealous, paranoid man who saw threats and treason everywhere, even when none existed, trusting no-one near his position and trusting only those lower officers and personnel who perpetually toadied and ‘proved their loyalty’ as lickspittles. It was not even long before the ship’s executive officer was accused of incompetence and disloyalty by Rand – unjustifiably, in bal-Evoros’ opinion – and disciplined, resulting in his reassignment and the ruining of his career. By “dead man’s boots”, Aglad found himself the first officer of the Purgator – and facing the captain’s wrath doubled upon him. This resulted in Commander bal-Evoros’ first command, though it was intended as a move to get rid of him by Captain Rand: after the Purgator captured five enemy Corellian gunships as prizes during an offensive patrol, he appointed Aglad to command them. They had only skeleton crews, and were somewhat damaged from their capture, and yet Rand expected enormous amounts of the gunship line, sending them into very unbalanced situations and expending them uselessly against superior targets. Against the odds, bal-Evoros succeeded in keeping the line together and surviving – despite Captain Rand’s attempts to ensure his death or disgrace. This unexpected gallantry soon led to further promotion, particularly with the continuing patronage of the Moff’s naval allies from long ago. Captain bal-Evoros was given a great boon – assigned to command a newly-built Carrack-class light cruiser still in the shipyards, he was privileged to be permitted to name the vessel. In honour of his homeworld, Aglad named the cruiser Praesitlyn’s Sword. Assigned to link up with a task force as its first mission, the Praesitlyn’s Sword was to jump straight into the sector at the designated rendezvous point. Due to the rapidly-changing situation, however, by the time the ship arrived, the task force had already moved on. Over the course of several days, Captain bal-Evoros led his ship from system to system, making hit-and-run raids and engaging the enemy while searching for the task force. Eventually, after detective work and several engagements with the enemy by which they captured prisoners and obtained information, the friendly task force was tracked down and the Praesitlyn’s Sword linked up with them as ordered, fighting a successful campaign from thereon. Eventually, this led to yet another assignment for Captain bal-Evoros. |
| Personality: Aglad is proud of his achievements and heritage, and therefore either comes across as or is slightly arrogant, depending on your point of view. He is a firm believer in the New Order and serves it faithfully, seeing it as a superior alternative to the chaos of the Old Republic. He is not, however, a cruel man, and is reasonable about accidental failure among his crew, though avoidable failure, however, is met with his wrath. He dislikes the rumours he has heard of atrocities perpetrated by the Empire – even though he dismisses them as fiction propagated by enemies of the New Order. To Captain bal-Evoros, the Empire stands for order, justice, and the rule of law – something history taught him was lacking in the Old Republic, and experience teaches him is lacking in the New Republic, and the idea of the twisting of these ideals is repugnant. |
| Objectives: To retire back to Praesitlyn at a distinguished age and rank, after a notable and honourable career. |
| A Quote: (Excepted from his speech upon taking command of Praesitlyn’s Sword) “We are the Empire’s sword – and so we must not fail in our duties to the Imperium!” |
